A D C Interview, Elizabeth Lane

Where are you from? Have you lived there all your life?

I grew up in a small Utah town set between snow-capped mountains and red-rock
country.  One younger sister.  My parents were teachers, both outdoor people.  Except for being the high school principal’s daughter I had a perfect childhood.  Since leaving, I’ve lived in several states, as well as Germany and Panama.  But Utah’s always been home base.  I’m now settled near Salt Lake City, twenty minutes from the mountains.

Married? Children? Pets? Day job?

I’ve been a single mom since 1984.  Three children.    Lost a beautiful daughter in a 1985
car accident.  My son is married with three children; my younger daughter is an artist.
These days I live with my two rescue cats and my teenage grandson who moved in with
me to finish school.  I’m retired from my day job, but I had a long career as an
educational software designer, a job that included writing a pile of children’s books.

Favorite foods?

Love sea food, and anything chocolate.  When working I fuel my muse with Ghirardelli bittersweet chocolate chips.

Name a few of your favorite things to do when you are getting away from it all?

I love to travel—favorite places include Europe, China, Nepal, Peru, Tanzania.  Recently celebrated a milestone birthday with a tandem sky dive.  On the less adventurous side, I enjoy hiking, music, movies and a killer yoga class.  For years I belly danced.  When I look at my beautiful costumes I want to go back and do it again.

Favorite music?

My CD collection includes classical, movie soundtracks, quirky foreign albums, rock, folk, a little country—everything but rap.

Favorite Movie? TV show?

“Casablanca.”    “Out of Africa” is a close second.  And this year I got hooked on “Once
Upon a Time.”

What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?

Live in the moment.

Tell us your latest news? Current projects?

After writing thirty-five historicals, I have my first Harlequin Desire coming out in
January and am working on a second.  After that I have a contract for another historical. No titles yet.  Stay tuned.

Easiest and hardest thing about writing?

Easiest is being able to write at home, on my own schedule (or non-schedule), in my jammies if I want to.
Hardest for me is just sitting still.  I have a lot of nervous energy and I’m constantly up and down.

What inspired you to write your first book? Where do you get some of your ideas?

When I was in my twenties I discovered the history of a remarkable woman, Doña
Marina, the Indian mistress of Hernán Cortés.  I knew even then that I wanted to write her story.  That book, Mistress of the Morning Star, is still available in e-book format.  Ideas? I keep my eyes, ears and mind open and they just sneak in.

How do you keep yourself focused?

Laughing here.  I’m probably the most unfocused writer I know.  If nothing else distracts me I create my own distractions.  That I manage to write at least two books a year
continues to amaze me.

What book are you reading now?

Just finished a friend’s well-thumbed copy of WINTER GARDEN by Kristin Hannah. Wonderful.

If you could say one thing to the next generation of authors, what would it be?

Publishing is a whole new world these days, constantly changing.  Prepare yourself to accept the changes and embrace them.  You can’t live in the past and survive.

What would you like to say to your readers?

Thank you.  I love you.  You’re the reason I keep writing.
