Interview with Jodi Thomas
Interview with NY Times Bestselling Author
Jodi Thomas is the NY Times and USA Today bestselling author of 37 novels and 11 short story collections. In June 2011, WELCOME TO HARMONY, the first book in the Harmony series, won a RITA, the highest award for women’s fiction. Jodi currently serves as the Writer in Residence at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas.
Where are you from?
I grew up in the Texas Panhandle and spent summers in Oklahoma. I walk with a slight limp from a fall off a horse. My doc calls it my old rodeo injury. So, I guess that makes me about as Texan as I can be. My house is even mission style.
Married? Children? Pets?
I met my husband in high school and I’ve been crazy about him ever since.
Do you have another job other than writing?
I’m the writer in residence at West Texas A&M University. I don’t teach but I do talk to students about writing. Some afternoons my office is full of students---mostly reading zombie stories.
What is your favorite place to eat?
Since the kids finally left home my favorite thing to make is reservations. We eat out probably every other night.
If I came to your home and looked inside the refrigerator, what would I find?
Lots of fruits and vegetables. When we’re staying in we almost always make a salad. You’d also find year old yogurt-- I’m always buying that stuff and never eating it.
Where do you like to go when you want to run away?
We run away every other summer. I love my home but sometimes I need to step away from wearing all the hats we wear and just be Tom and Jodi, two wild kids.
Attending any conventions/conferences this year?
RWA in Atlanta in July
West Texas A&M University Writing Academy in June.
Adeline Book Festival in Sept.
Buns and Roses in Dallas in October
Do you have a critique partner?
Dewanna Pace and I started writing together. She reads everything I write. We’ve been dear friends for years but she never hesitates when she thinks I’ve fallen off the deep end to correct me.
Something silly you have done …
With four grandchildren under four I love playing in the water outside, then we all sit at the bottom of the stairs and read.
Tell us your latest news? Current projects?
I’m up for three great awards. All will be named in Atlanta at RWA. The National Readers Choice, the Booksellers Best Award and the RITA.
Easiest and hardest thing about writing?
Staying on a time schedule is hard. Telling the story is easy, rewriting it is hard.
What inspired you to write your first book?
I’ve always loved telling stores but it was the fact that I had two small sons and I wanted them to go to college that drove me to study the markets, study writing, rewrite, rewrite, rewrite until I got it right.
If you could say one thing to the next generation of authors, what would it be?
Study craft before you jump in the water. Write the very best book you can at any point in your life.
What would you like to say to your readers?
Thank you for coming along with me on my journey into fiction. I feel a bond with my readers and often work a little later at night knowing they are out here waiting.
