Here’s a little about my contribution:
Whipped By Sabrina York
Dane Coulter is mourning the loss of his best friend, fellow Special Ops buddy, Cody. Oh, Cody didn’t die. It’s worse. He’s getting married. Cody is, in Dane’s opinion, whipped.
Dane swears he will never suffer the same fate. But when he meets a woman who can take all his dominant loving and beg for more, he realizes he may have met his match. It’s a damn shame she’s the one woman in the world his man-code deems untouchable…his best friend’s sister.
I expect the 5th book in my Noble Passions (Regency) Series to release at any time. Defiant tells the tale of Sophia St. Andrews, the fearsome McCloud’s baby sister, who rebels against the future her brother has laid out for her by running away—on a glorious adventure—following the man she adores. But Ned has been forbidden to so much as speak to the angelic beauty, the woman who has snagged his heart. Will he dare defy the powerful McCloud and claim her for his own? I promise, it will be a lot of fun. There’s a pirate adventure, humor and, of course, a steamy romance.
Hot Alpha Highlanders
As if this were not all exciting enough, I am working on a three book series for St. Martin’s Press, set in Regency Scotland. I am deep in development of the first book and am in love with my hero! Picture a braw, tormented laird, standing atop a rocky tor, buffeted by the harsh winds of change—and the woman whose love could save him, or destroy all he has built.
Another project slated to release in the early fall is a set of Hometown Hero Romances which will be offered in a bundle—and all the proceeds go to heart disease research.
Please follow me to receive updates on these and the many other exciting releases!
Any special events, signings, or conventions we can find you at this year?
I will be attending the Pacific Northwest Writers Conference in July and though this is a writers’ conference, there is a book signing open to the public. Authors won’t want to miss my workshops on Street Teams and Navigating for Newbies.
My home RWA conference is the Emerald City Writers’ Conference which takes place in Bellevue Washington in October. I will be signing at this event and speaking on Writing Hot as well.
In April of 2015 I am excited to be attending Barbara Vey’s Reader’s Luncheon in Milwaukee. This is a wonderful opportunity for readers to meet their favorite authors in a very intimate environment. Registration opens July 1st and the event will fill up! Check it out today if this sounds like fun to you—and be sure to take a look at the list of authors in attendance.
What fun things do you do to keep inspirational with your writing. Anything quirky?
I love research. Especially when I am working on historical stories. I can sink in deep, reading dry tomes on battles and conflicts of old. Movies and music are great forms of inspiration as well, but I find I must listen to classical music when I am writing, or the words get all tangled up.
If I get stuck in my work, I will go for a drive and crank the radio. For some reason, disengaging my brain seems to work well.
But the best method I have found to inspire my work is to push through. The more I write, the better I know my characters and clarity coalesces.
My goal for this year is to write one million words. (I am at 500,000). If I make it—I get to have a cookie. This may not seem like much for a million words, but in my low-carb universe, a gooey chocolate chip cookie is a bright and shining dream!
What have you learned since that first release?
I have learned more than I could express here without writing a novel or two. Everything from marketing strategies, writing cleaner, editing secrets and market positioning. But if I could share just a few truths they would be these:
Focus on the writing. It is so easy to get caught up with social media and marketing and blogging and a thousand other things that try to steal your attention. But as an author, your primary purpose is the production of excellent, emotional and gripping story. Guard your writing time with a passion.
What goes up (on Amazon) will come down. I have had some amazing highs in my two years as a published author, including a #1 book, but there have been some dry spells as well. Authors who want to survive in this business need to understand that it’s a long game.
Everything is about relationships. Your friendships within the writing and publishing community as well as with your loyal readers are worth more than anything. Preserve them and cherish them.
What would you like to say to your readers and fans?
Thank you! While I love writing and creating fun and sexy stories, my work is nothing without you.
Do you write other genres besides erotic romance?
Right now I am focusing on romance—on the steamy end of things. I prefer stories with emotional depth that extends beyond playtime in the bedroom. Though they are all hot, my books are, at their core, romance.
That said, I have other books in my files I may revisit at some point. They include women’s fiction, historical, sci-fi and fantasy. I love writing everything!
Putting ideas to paper, do you have a routine? Or do you just wing it?
I have a very specific plotting method. I begin with character development, identifying a set of key factors for my hero, heroine and nemesis (if there is one). From there, I map out the critical turning points, adding them to a chart where they belong in the book. Once I have the bones down, I like to flesh out the tension points—this adds more action and minor turning points. I pay special attention to Act I (the beginning) and Act III (the end.) Then I turn my attention to Act II (the middle of the book) making sure the pacing is effective and plausible.
Once this is all down on my nifty chart, I write. When I KNOW the characters and the plot, it flows fairly quickly. If I stall, it is because something has not been fleshed out.
That said, I have been known to wander off the path I charted.
But books are an adventure. We should go off the grid every once in a while, shouldn’t we?
