One Good Man
Harlequin Blaze #494
For the past ten years, Jamie Danby has made a life for herself in a small west Texas town, working as office manager to a pediatrician and spending a lot of time with her mother, who lives nearby. She's about to turn thirty, but this life began when her old life ended, when she was nineteen. She was the lone survivor of a multiple homicide, but couldn't remember anything to help the investigation. Now that the last body has been found, the case is in the headlines again, and Jamie is afraid the killer will find her and finish the job.
Enter Texas Ranger Kellen Harding, whose mentor was on the case ten years ago. Now his mentor is dead, and Kell feels personally driven to solve the case. He hopes to put Jamie under hypnosis to see if she has any repressed memories that could help the case. She resists at first, but eventually agrees. They share a strong attraction, and all their determination not to succumb in the middle of the investigation cannot combat its power.
Alison Kent's latest has appealing characters, a strong premise and an exciting and satisfying conclusion. The only thing stopping it from being a five-star read is the love scene in the middle of the book, which cuts the building tension and slows down the action.
