...Once a Gambler
Harlequin Blaze #461Mass Market
It's been nearly a year since Ellie Winslow's sister disappeared, and though her fiance wants her to forget and move on, she just can't do it. When a strangely dressed man tells her to look at the photo in her grandmother's trunk-- he claims it will help her find her sister-- she flies to Deadwood to see for herself. In the trunk she sees an old photo that appears to have her sister in it. When her sister turns and looks at her, Ellie goes back in time, and wakes up in a riverboat on the Mississippi, in gambler Jake Gannon's cabin.
When a strange woman in outlandish clothing tells him that another woman stole his pocket watch, he's sure she's the guilty party and tells her to strip to prove it. Later, he discovers she told the truth, but he does not believe her tale of being from the future. He tells the ship's captain that she is his wife, and deals with his enemy, a man from his dark and ugly past who's willing to kill to get what he wants. Surprisingly, the man's ultimate goal involves Ellie as well.
Newcomer Carrie Hudson pens this entertaining and assured time travel novel linked to last month's Once an Outlaw. This tale stands alone, but reader enjoyment is enhanced by reading both tales.
