Queen by Right
Anne Easter Smith
Touchstone, Paperback
**** 1/2
It is 1424 at Raby Castle in Durham, England, and Cecily Neville, daughter of Ralph Neville, Earl of Westmoreland and sixth Baron of Raby, meets her husband to be Richard Plantagenet, third Duke of York. Cecily is nine years old and Richard, thirteen. They marry in 1429 and two of her sons became kings. Queen by Right has all the passion, danger, richness and tragedy of a royal romance, but outdoes most similar novels because the novel is written well. Engrossing because of author Anne Easter Smith's attention to detail, the book comes alive and takes the reader back to the 15th century. The characters breathe and live on the pages; the setting is breathtaking.
What is best about the novel, however, is that Cecily and Richard did love each other, and their relationship pulls the couple into the story. As with most marriages, but to a far greater degree due to the station of the couple and their family members, there is tragedy, triumph, suspense and celebration.
The book is eloquently written. Details sparkle on the pages, and the story is truly fascinating. Definitely a good read and a very moving love story.
