It's 1956 and Grace, along with her boss, Naomi Wei, is in Two Forks, Texas, to shoot a movie called I Was A Teenage Vampire. Grace is Naomi's personal assistant, and they are on their way to the ranch of Christian Durand to talk him into playing the lead in the movie. Grace loves her job, loves her boss and thinks working with movie stars in different locales is just the best. But when she meets Christian for the first time, all the previous stars that she had met fade into the background. Christian is a gorgeous, good guy with the bad guy image, bike and all, and Grace falls hard. What Grace doesn't realize is that Christian is a vampire, and he and Grace had met in a previous time when Grace was a ghost. Grace also doesn't realize that her boss is really Nim Wei, queen of the vampires.
When Nim Wei called Christian about starring in her movie, he couldn't believe his ears. Why on earth would the bitch queen of the vampire world be posing as a movie director and making a movie called I Was A Teenage Vampire? What could she possibly be up to? Then when he saw Grace driving Nim Wei, he thought his heart would stop. Unlike Grace, Christian remembered everything from their past lives--how important Grace was to him, how she saved his life so many times, and how she had betrayed him.
Emma Holly, once again, has penned a tale of the upyr that puts you in the story like you were one of the characters. Her worlds are so realistic that her books are hard to put down. Christian and Grace are continuing characters from her previous book, but this tale easily stands alone. All is explained beautifully and love conquers all, even in the vampire world.
When Grace Gladwell found herself at the bottom of the amphitheater looking up at a clear, blue sky, she realized three things: 1. she was still a teenager; 2. it was no longer the 1950's; and 3. her father had finally killed her with his anger. After meeting with her guide Michael who asks her what she really wanted in her life and telling him she just wanted a friend for life, she finds herself in 15th century Switzerland.
Christian Durand, only son of Gregori Durand, was practicing in the yard with his men. A young likeable man, Christian was nothing like his father who was a cruel, merciless, bear of a man who ruled his men through fear. Christian's men were loyal to him for totally different reasons. When he suddenly started talking to a ghost named Grace, they didn't question him too much.
This is one of Emma Holly's best books, hands down. The storyline is definitely unique and a little complicated but well worth following until the spectacular ending. Grace and Christian have a lot of baggage to overcome before being able to trust each other, mostly the fact that Grace is a ghost (and from the future), and Christian doesn't really believe in spirits. Grace, being a brand new ghost, doesn't know how to access her ghostly powers yet and is constantly fading in and out. Christian is a 15th century warrior whose father is trying to kill him to teach him how to be a man. They really have a lot in common, and the voyage they undertake while falling in love is epic. Ms. Holly's superb writing skill keeps the reader riveted to their seat, and the ending of this love story is brilliant.
