Cooper Hansen is going home, and it will be an uncomfortable experience. Years ago, he was involved in a tragic accident that took his mother’s life. His father blamed him, and he still blames himself for her death. He’s avoided home ever since, even when his brother died. But now his father has had a stroke, and the ranch is in trouble. He must face the music now.
Millie Hansen has been struggling to run the ranch, pay the bills, and care for her father in law. Now Cooper has come back, and it’s hard for her to hold back her resentment. Slowly he wins her over, even as he butts heads with his father. But it seems inappropriate to lust after her brother in law.
Laura Marie Altom’s "Operation: Family" series just gets better with every book, and they all stand-alone. The emotional intensity of this tale will win over readers from the first page. The complications of Cooper’s father’s stroke and Millie’s rebellious daughter add realistic layers to the tale.

Mason Brown never wanted to be back in Conifer, Alaska, but he has been named in his ex wife's will and needs to be at the reading. He wants nothing from Melissa, especially after she cheated on him with his best friend, who became her second husband, then died with her in a plane crash. He is horrified and angered to discover that Melissa left her infant twins to him in her will and wants to wash his hands of the whole situation--particularly because he shares custody with Melissa's little sister.
Hattie Beaumont is shocked to gain custody of her twin nieces, but this shock is the least of her troubles. Her parents, lost in grief, lash out at both Hattie and Mason. As she has had a crush on Mason forever, the current situation makes her feel like her old yearnings to step into her sister's life have become sickeningly true, even more so because of Mason's surprising desire for her.
Laura Marie Altom pens a moving tale full of raw, painful emotions. Her lead characters wrestle with grief and anger, as do her amazingly well drawn secondary characters, particularly Hattie's parents. Best of all, this book may be part of a series, but it completely stands alone.
